A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of March 20 through 26, 2016, as "Poison
Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The health and safety of this Commonwealth's
residents, especially children, are of utmost concern; and
WHEREAS, Accidental poisonings from pharmaceuticals,
household products and plants are pressing threats to public
health; and
WHEREAS, Of these accidental poisonings, 94% occur in the
home, with 35% involving children under three years of age; and
WHEREAS, Many of these poisonings could be avoided through
education and simple safety precautions; and
WHEREAS, The poison control centers serving this Commonwealth
give immediate information and treatment advice from toxicology
professionals regarding suspected toxic exposure to drugs,
chemicals and plants; and
WHEREAS, These poison control centers provide services 24
hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year; and

WHEREAS, These poison control centers provide services that
allow for poison exposures to be treated in the home, avoiding
unnecessary health care costs and averting panic; therefore be
it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of March 20
through 26, 2016, as "Poison Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania
and express appreciation to the poison control centers in this
Commonwealth for their efforts to promote the reduction of
morbidity and mortality from poisonings through the
dissemination of information about poison prevention and
treatment advice, public and professional education and
scientific research.
