A RESOLUTION
Recognizing February 4, 2016, as "World Cancer Day" in
Pennsylvania to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage
its prevention, detection and treatment.
WHEREAS, "World Cancer Day" was founded by the Union for
International Cancer Control to support the goals of the World
Cancer Declaration, written in 2008; and
WHEREAS, The primary goal of "World Cancer Day" is to
significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer before
the year 2020; and
WHEREAS, The World Health Organization reports that cancers
are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality
worldwide, with approximately 8.2 million cancer-related deaths
in 2012; and
WHEREAS, It is expected that annual cancer cases will rise
from 14 million in 2012 to 22 million within the next two
decades; and
WHEREAS, Cancer mortality can be reduced if cases are
detected and treated early; and

WHEREAS, The 2016 "World Cancer Day" theme, "We can. I can."
highlights how everyone, together or individually, can do their
part to reduce the global burden of cancer; and
WHEREAS, The Mayo Clinic recommends tips to reduce your risk
for cancer, including: avoiding tobacco products; eating a
healthy diet; maintaining a health weight; being physically
active; protecting yourself from the sun; getting immunized; and
consulting with your doctor about setting up a personalized
cancer screening schedule; and
WHEREAS, Cancer is a disease that knows no boundaries and has
or will affect us all either directly or indirectly during out
lifetime; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize February 4, 2016, as
"World Cancer Day" in Pennsylvania to raise awareness of cancer
and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment.
