A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of October 2015 as "National Disability
Employment Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "National Disability Employment Awareness Month" is
observed in October each year; and
WHEREAS, During "National Disability Employment Awareness
Month," a nationwide campaign raises awareness about disability
employment issues and honors the many contributions of America's
workers with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, The observance of "National Disability Employment
Awareness Month" promotes positive employment outcomes for
people with disabilities and endeavors to expand ideas about
what youth with disabilities can achieve when they receive
encouragement and support for their ambitions; and
WHEREAS, The aim this month is to inspire workplaces to build
an inclusive community; and
WHEREAS, "National Disability Employment Awareness Month"

traces its history to 1945, when Congress declared the first
week in October each year "National Employ the Physically
Handicapped Week"; and
WHEREAS, In 1954, Congress directed the President's Committee
on "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week" to work
with state and local authorities to promote job opportunities
for the physically handicapped; and
WHEREAS, In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to
acknowledge the needs and contributions of individuals with all
types of disabilities; and
WHEREAS, In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and
adopted its current name; and
WHEREAS, Twenty-five years after the signing of the Americans
with Disabilities Act, great progress has been made in removing
barriers to employment for those with disabilities, yet further
opportunities for progress exist; and
WHEREAS, The theme for this year, which marks 70 years since
the first observance of "National Disability Employment
Awareness Month," is "My Disability Is One Part of Who I Am";
and
WHEREAS, The theme was selected by the United States
Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy to
recognize that people with disabilities are the sum of many
parts, including their work experiences; and
WHEREAS, "National Disability Employment Awareness Month"
coincides with the national celebration of "Disability History
Month" during the third week of the month of October; and
WHEREAS, There is no equivalent to "National Disability
Employment Awareness Month" in this Commonwealth; therefore be
