A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 75th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Turnpike
and its impact on this Commonwealth and America's Interstate
Highway System.
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Turnpike will celebrate 75 years of
service in October, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The original, 160-mile section of the Pennsylvania
Turnpike opened just after midnight on October 1, 1940,
welcoming motorists to travel between Carlisle and Irwin; and
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Turnpike set the national standard
for modern, limited-access highways and served as the model upon
which America's Interstate Highway System was built; and
WHEREAS, The original, 160-mile toll road that carried 2.7
million vehicles in its first full year of operation has today
been expanded to 552 miles carrying more than 194 million
vehicles a year; and
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Turnpike is in the process of
rebuilding and widening the entire roadway from four lanes to
