A RESOLUTION
Recognizing September 21, 2015, as "Monday of P.O.W.E.R." in
Pittsburgh and commemorating the contributions of Women In
Bio in this Commonwealth.
WHEREAS, Monday of P.O.W.E.R. (Pittsburgh Outstanding Women
Entrepreneurs Rally) is being held September 21, 2015, in
recognition and celebration of professional women in western
Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and West Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Women In Bio (WIB) is a national organization of
professionals committed to promoting careers, leadership and
entrepreneurship for women in the life sciences; and
WHEREAS, WIB was established in 2002 to help women
entrepreneurs and executives in the Baltimore, Washington, DC
and northern Virginia area build successful bioscience-related
businesses, to provide a forum for women to come together, to
celebrate and support each other's success and, in so doing,
create a dynamic and invaluable forum for the local community;
and
WHEREAS, The mission of WIB was expanded several years later
with a vision to grow it into an organization with a national

footprint that would impact the careers of women in all sectors
of the life sciences industry; and
WHEREAS, WIB now has 11 chapters throughout North America,
led by more than 100 volunteers and a membership base of over
1,000 individuals; and
WHEREAS, Thousands of women attend WIB events each year and
continue to grow the organization through their ideas,
activities and donations; and
WHEREAS, WIB aims to help women achieve the highest levels of
leadership, influence and decision making that they desire; and
WHEREAS, WIB's primary focus is to provide women-to-women
mentorship and leadership support through all stages of career
development; and
WHEREAS, In 2012, five Pittsburgh entrepreneurs and academics
launched a local chapter of WIB-Pittsburgh, a nonprofit
organization working to support recognized and emerging women
leaders in the life sciences of western Pennsylvania, eastern
Ohio and West Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Founding members of WIB-Pittsburgh include Lyn
Brusco, Babs Carryer, Lidiya Orlichenko, Dottie Clowere and Pat
Rogan; and
WHEREAS, WIB-Pittsburgh is working to support recognized and
emerging women leaders in the biosciences industry of western
Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and West Virginia; and
WHEREAS, The organization's mission is to promote knowledge
sharing among women, impact regional economic growth and
stimulate empowerment among women leaders; and
WHEREAS, The organization believes that women have the unique
potential for improving companies' strategic positions and
growth by offering intelligence, spirit, leadership and vision

to the biotech, pharmaceutical and health care industries;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize September 21, 2015, as
"Monday of P.O.W.E.R." in Pittsburgh and commemorate the
contributions of Women In Bio in this Commonwealth; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the important work of the
National and Pittsburgh Chapters of Women In Bio.
