A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and memory of Senator William J. Moore and
expressing gratitude for his service and profound sorrow over
his loss.
WHEREAS, Former Senator William J. Moore of New Bloomfield
was born in 1923 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and graduated from Tulsa
Central High School; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore received a full scholarship for
wrestling at the University of Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore attained the rank of First Lieutenant
in the United States Army and served in the South Pacific during
World War II; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore received engineering training at the
University of Maryland and assisted in the rebuilding of air
strips and other projects in the South Pacific; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore graduated from the United States Army
Command and General Staff College and served in the United
States Army Reserve; and

WHEREAS, In 1981, Senator Moore was inducted into the
Infantry School Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, Georgia; and
WHEREAS, After World War II, Senator Moore returned to the
University of Pennsylvania to study finance and commerce at the
Wharton School; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore settled in New Bloomfield, Perry
County, and established a successful insurance business; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore was committed to community service,
serving as president of the school board and the Perry County
Boy Scouts; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore was active in the United Way, the
Masonic Temple of Newport Lodge F. & A.M. and the Keboch United
Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore was a strong advocate for the Carson
Long Military Academy and its work with young men; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore served in the House of Representatives
from 1971 through 1972; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore was elected to the State Senate in
1972, and reelected in 1976 and 1980; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore was elected Minority Caucus Secretary
and Majority Caucus Chairman in 1980; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore is survived by his wife, Sally Jane
Moore, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore represented Adams, Franklin, Juniata,
Perry and Cumberland Counties with distinction and dedication;
and
WHEREAS, Senator Moore was a highly respected member of the
Pennsylvania State Senate and will be remembered for his
kindness and optimism; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the life and memory of

Senator William J. Moore and express its gratitude for his
service and profound sorrow over his loss; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate extend condolences to the family of
our former colleague, the Honorable William J. Moore, and direct
that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to his family.
