A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of May 2015 as "Melanoma and Skin Cancer
Detection and Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The skin is the largest and most visible organ of
the body and performs many essential tasks, such as regulating
body temperature, protecting internal organs, providing
sensation and supporting metabolic functions; and
WHEREAS, Current estimates indicate that one in five
Americans will develop skin cancer in his or her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, More than 2 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer
are diagnosed in the United States each year; and
WHEREAS, Recent estimates show that 123,590 new cases of
melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, will be diagnosed
in the United States each year; and
WHEREAS, Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young
adults 25 to 29 years of age and the second most common form of
cancer for adolescents and young adults 15 to 29 years of age;
and
WHEREAS, The estimated total direct cost associated with the

treatment of melanoma in 2010 was $2.36 billion; and
WHEREAS, Melanoma and other skin cancers are highly treatable
if detected early; and
WHEREAS, Sun exposure is the most preventable risk factor for
all skin cancers, including melanoma; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of May 2015 as
"Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month" in
Pennsylvania.
