A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of May 2015 as "Brain Tumor Awareness
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "Brain Tumor Awareness Month" is an opportunity for
us to come together as a community and spotlight the tributes
and triumphs of all those impacted by a brain tumor diagnosis
and the need for greater understanding of the disease and safer,
more effective treatments; and
WHEREAS, There are more than 120 types of brain tumors; and
WHEREAS, Brain tumors do not discriminate against any gender,
age or ethnic background; and
WHEREAS, Primary brain tumors, those that begin in the brain
and tend to stay in the brain, occur in people of all ages but
are statistically more frequent in children and older adults;
and
WHEREAS, Metastatic brain tumors, those that begin as cancer
elsewhere in the body and spread to the brain, are more common

in adults than children; and
WHEREAS, Symptoms associated with brain tumors and treatment
often include headaches, seizures, sensory or motor loss,
hearing loss, vision loss, fatigue, depression and behavioral
and cognitive changes; and
WHEREAS, Nearly 70,000 new cases of primary brain tumors will
be diagnosed this year; and
WHEREAS, Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related
deaths in children under 20 years of age, the second leading
cause of cancer-related deaths in males between 20 and 39 years
of age and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in
females between 20 and 39 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1973, the American Brain Tumor
Association was the first national nonprofit organization
dedicated solely to brain tumor research and has been providing
comprehensive resources that support the complex needs of brain
tumor patients and caregivers, as well as the critical funding
of research in the pursuit of breakthroughs in brain tumor
diagnosis, treatment and care; and
WHEREAS, "Brain Tumor Awareness Month" will help bring to
light the serious issue of brain tumors and urge individuals who
are experiencing any unusual symptoms to go to their doctors for
testing; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of May 2015 as
"Brain Tumor Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
