A RESOLUTION
Designating September 25, 2016, as "Gold Star Mother's Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Throughout this nation's history, the men and women
of the United States Armed Forces have put their nation's
security before their own, doing their duty in the face of grave
danger; and
WHEREAS, During World War I, Service Flags were displayed
from homes, businesses, schools and churches to indicate, by the
use of a blue star, each active service member in the United

States Military; and
WHEREAS, A gold star stitched over a blue star showed the
nation those who had given their lives for their country and the
devotion and pride of those left behind; and
WHEREAS, In 1928, the Gold Star tradition was formalized in
Washington, DC, by a group of mothers who had lost sons and
daughters in service to their country; and
WHEREAS, This group met to form the American Gold Star
Mothers, Inc., organization, a nondenominational, nonprofit and
nonpolitical organization; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's Gold Star Mothers are remarkable
patriots who serve their communities by demonstrating good
citizenship, providing support and services to troops and
veterans and comforting the families whose loved ones have made
the ultimate sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, Although they carry a great burden of grief, the
courageous Gold Star Mothers help ensure that the legacy of this
nation's fallen heroes will be forever remembered; and
WHEREAS, The sons and daughters of Pennsylvania's Gold Star
Mothers have served this nation during World War I, World War
II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Conflict, the Third Balkan
War, the peacetime attack on the USS Cole by terrorists and the
conflicts in the Middle East including Operation Desert Storm,
Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and
WHEREAS, This nation remembers these young men and women with
pride and deepest appreciation; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the courage of Gold Star Mothers,
the General Assembly, by Senate Joint Resolution 115 of June 23,
1936 (49 Stat. 185), designated the last Sunday in September as
"Gold Star Mother's Day," which resolved authorizing and

requesting that the President of the United States issue a
proclamation in observance of this day; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
September 25, 2016, as "Gold Star Mother's Day" in Pennsylvania.
