A RESOLUTION
Designating July 16, 2016, as "Atomic Veterans Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Many of the nation's veterans were subjected to
varying amounts of radiation due to atomic weapons testing from
1945 to 1963; and
WHEREAS, The potential harm to these veterans was unknown at
the time of testing, which resulted in exposure to harmful doses
of radiation; and
WHEREAS, The health of more than 250,000 veterans and their
children may have been adversely affected as a result of the
United States testing or detonating nuclear weapons; and
WHEREAS, Some of those veterans are residents of
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Many veterans who were early test subjects were
injured in the line of duty but received no medals because they
were not in combat; and

WHEREAS, The number of atomic veterans is rapidly decreasing
and it is most appropriate to recognize their sacrifices for
this nation's freedom; and
WHEREAS, The National Association of Atomic Veterans (NAAV)
seeks to locate and help these veterans and their children, who
may be genetically affected, in obtaining medical treatment and
assistance; and
WHEREAS, By engaging in a national research and education
effort for atomic veterans, NAAV is promoting early detection of
medical problems and research and documentation of the
connection between radiation exposure and resultant cancer and
other debilitating, degenerative diseases and genetic mutations
in offspring; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July
16, 2016, as "Atomic Veterans Day" in Pennsylvania and urge all
those who participated in United States atmospheric nuclear
weapons tests or in the United States occupation of Hiroshima
and Nagasaki following World War II to contact the National
Association of Atomic Veterans, P.O. Box 11517, Chandler, AZ
85248.
