A RESOLUTION
Honoring the legacy of Richard "Dick" Anthony Allen as a
standout baseball player and for his contributions to the
Philadelphia Phillies and calling for the voters on the
veterans committee to elect Mr. Allen to the National
Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017.
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Anthony Allen was born March 8, 1941,
in Wampum, Pennsylvania, and grew up in neighboring Chewton; and
WHEREAS, Upon graduation from Wampum High School in 1960, Mr.
Allen was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies for an estimated
$70,000; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen played in the minor leagues for a few
years where he was exposed to poor racial relations within the
baseball industry in the early 1960s; and
WHEREAS, On September 3, 1963, Mr. Allen was called up from
the minor leagues to make his major league debut for the
Phillies in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen remained with the Phillies for six
