A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of May 16 through 20, 2016, as "Local
Community Leader Appreciation Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, During a period when violence and social unrest is
seemingly widespread in our nation, one of the most vital lines
of defense is dedicated local community leaders; and
WHEREAS, Local community leaders have their fingers placed
squarely upon the pulse of the populace; and
WHEREAS, Local community leaders, through their efforts to
assist our local officials in an ancillary role, are able to
make significant strides in rooting out the prevalence of
blight, drug activity and the overall incidence of crime; and
WHEREAS, Every day, our community leaders spend countless
hours watching over our neighborhoods and doing their best to
render them as safe havens for our children, senior citizens and
all others; and

WHEREAS, Following the economic downturn that both our nation
and this Commonwealth have recently experienced, many of our
communities are forced to do more with less resources; and
WHEREAS, Many vitally important and noteworthy individuals
throughout this Commonwealth meet the standard of being
community leaders; and
WHEREAS, In particular, individuals such as the Democratic
Sixth Ward Leader in West Philadelphia and several members of
the Philadelphia Masjid Community Outreach Committee have
answered the clarion call to duty and made a conscious decision
to take back their communities from the criminal and deleterious
elements that have sought to blight and destroy them; and
WHEREAS, The courageous and altruistic efforts of such
individuals have directly engendered an atmosphere of grassroots
coalition building and active community engagement and have
instilled a widespread sense of pride within the residents of
West Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Working in tandem with other influential community
leaders, such as the local neighborhood block captains and local
officials, Philadelphia community leaders have achieved a
measurable amount of success in curtailing drug activity and
beautifying their community; and
WHEREAS, Efforts such as these are not exclusive to the City
of Philadelphia and are emblematic of the tenacity, passion and
fortitude possessed by local community leaders in every locality
in this Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
week of May 16 through 20, 2016, as "Local Community Leader
Appreciation Week" in Pennsylvania.
