A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and congratulating the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority on their annual "AKA Day at the Capitol" and the
organization's recommitment to social service.
WHEREAS, Founded in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
Incorporated is the world's oldest African American sorority
created by collegiate women on the campus of Howard University;
and
WHEREAS, The nine founding members built the sorority's
platform on a staunch commitment to change the patterns of human
relations and social justice in America during the tumultuous
20th century; and
WHEREAS, Sorority members have worked tenaciously to remain
steadfast in promoting the organizational themes of upholding
the collective strength of women and their remarkable abilities
to lead, as well as building a more globally connected
community; and

WHEREAS, In the past 107 years, the sorority has blossomed
into a prestigious, well-respected organization, home to more
than 265,000 women holding memberships to 986 chapters
throughout the United States, the United States Virgin Islands,
the Caribbean, Canada, Japan, Germany, Korea, Africa and beyond;
and
WHEREAS, Under the leadership of International President
Dorothy Buchanan Wilson, the sorority kicked off a new campaign
titled "Launching New Dimensions in Service," to address
educational enrichment, health promotion, family strengthening,
environmental ownership and global impact; and
WHEREAS, The North Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority is home to more than 100 chapters, including
approximately two dozen chapters and more than 4,000 members
residing in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Regional Director Meredith
L. Henderson, chapters throughout this Commonwealth continue to
flourish through members' community service, social and
political action and scholastic achievement; and
WHEREAS, The sorority consistently exhibits this ideology by
hosting annual events and educational workshops to ensure access
to opportunities for higher education through scholarship
initiatives and mentoring programs throughout this Commonwealth;
and
WHEREAS, The sorority also works tirelessly to uplift our men
and women in the United States Armed Forces and their families
with social and psychological support, as well as provide care
for the homeless community by sponsoring special food
initiatives and clothing drives; and
WHEREAS, The 2015 regional theme "AKA Dimensions of Service:

Civil Rights and Social Justice" reaffirms the organization's
members' commitment to improve the social, racial, economic and
physical conditions within this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Members will continue to employ "AKA Day at the
Capitol" as a method to strengthen the relationships between
elected officials and the communities they are sworn to serve;
and
WHEREAS, Tied together by their uniform commitment to live by
the organization's motto "By Culture and By Merit," the ladies
of Alpha Kappa Alpha, in their salmon pink, apple green and
stylish pearls are always "Packed, Polished, and Prepared to
Serve"; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
congratulate the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority on their
annual "AKA Day at the Capitol" and the organization's
recommitment to social service.
