A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating the week of May 12 through 18, 2014, as "State
2Squires Week" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, Since the early days of its founding, the Knights of
4Columbus have worked to provide for the welfare and foster the
5development of young people as they follow their paths to
6adulthood; and

7WHEREAS, The Columbian Squires, the official youth
8organization of the Knights of Columbus, is a leadership
9development program for young Catholic men between 10 and 18
10years of age; and

11WHEREAS, More than 25,000 young men participate in more than
121,500 Columbian Squires local units, called circles, throughout
13the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico,
14the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and Guam; and

15WHEREAS, The Squires is designed to develop men as leaders
16who understand their Catholic religion and who have a strong
17commitment to their church; and

1WHEREAS, The Squires is involved in promoting Catholic social
2causes, such as the preservation of human life, feeding the
3hungry, clothing the poor, supporting Special Olympics and
4promoting Catholic education, among countless other activities;
5and

6WHEREAS, A Squires circle is an athletic team, a youth group,
7a social club, a cultural and civic improvement association, a
8management training course, a civil rights organization and a
9spiritual development program all rolled into one; and

10WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Squires Convention will be
11held in Mechanicsburg this year from May 16 through 18; and

12WHEREAS, The theme of this year's convention is "Peace,
13Prosperity, Personhood"; therefore be it

14RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of May 12
15through 18, 2014, as "State Squires Week" in Pennsylvania.
