A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing the week of April 13 through 19, 2014, as "National
2Library Week" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is an
4observance sponsored by the American Library Association and
5libraries across the country each April; and

6WHEREAS, National Library Week celebrates the valuable
7contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers and
8the services and resources they provide to people of all ages
9throughout the United States; and

10WHEREAS, All types of libraries across the country
11participate, including school, public, academic and special
12libraries; and

13WHEREAS, Libraries have something for everyone and have
14evolved to meet the needs of all members of the community; and

15WHEREAS, Libraries have worked hard over time to transform
16into more than a repository for books by meeting the demands of

1a technology-based society with such items as e-books and audio
2books, computer stations and other digital resources; and

3WHEREAS, The 2014 theme, "Lives Change @ Your Library,"
4illustrates that libraries help individuals, communities and
5schools change for the better through the various resources
6available free of charge to residents; and

7WHEREAS, The theme also demonstrates that libraries and
8librarians have a powerful and positive impact on the lives of
9Pennsylvania's residents on a daily basis because they are a
10place that people go to reconnect and engage with one another
11while at the same time enriching their lives for the better with
12the vast knowledge that is available at libraries; and

13WHEREAS, Libraries in Pennsylvania serve millions of visitors
14each year and conduct hundreds of thousands of programs for
15children, parents, entrepreneurs, senior citizens and students
16on topics such as resume writing, employment material, financial
17planning and retirement services, creating arts and crafts,
18registering for health care or learning how to use the latest
19technology; and

20WHEREAS, National Library Week encourages all residents to
21visit their local libraries to take advantage of the wonderful
22resources and opportunities available to them and allow the
23libraries to change their lives for the better; therefore be it

24RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of April 13
25through 19, 2014, as "National Library Week" in Pennsylvania.
