A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating March 18, 2014, as "Pitt Day" in Pennsylvania and
2commending Chancellor Nordenberg for his leadership of the
3University of Pittsburgh.

4WHEREAS, Founded in 1787 and established by an act of the
5General Assembly that year, the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt)
6has evolved from humble origins in a log cabin into an
7internationally recognized center of learning and research; and

8WHEREAS, Pitt has uniquely enriched higher education in our
9Commonwealth as a State-related university since 1966; and

10WHEREAS, Over the last two decades, Pitt has attracted more
11than $9 billion in sponsored research support into the region;
12and

13WHEREAS, The nearly $760 million in sponsored research that
14the university brings to western Pennsylvania annually supports
15more than 28,000 jobs, directly and indirectly; and

16WHEREAS, Pitt is one of the nation's best institutions for
17undergraduate education according to The Princeton Review's

1annual college guide, "The Best 378 Colleges: 2014 Edition"; and

2WHEREAS, For the ninth consecutive year, Kiplinger's Personal
3Finance ranks Pitt as the top value among all public colleges
4and universities in Pennsylvania, and also ranks Pitt as the
519th best value among public universities in the country for
6out-of-state students. Pitt is also the only Pennsylvania
7college or university included in The Princeton Review's "Best
8Value Colleges: 2014 Edition," based on academic quality, cost
9and financial aid; and

10WHEREAS, Pitt employs more than 13,300 residents of this
11Commonwealth at its five campuses; and

12WHEREAS, Pitt has earned further recognition for its Pitt
13Panthers athletic teams and its broad array of educational and
14cultural programs and health initiatives; and

15WHEREAS, Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg joined the University
16of Pittsburgh in 1977 as a faculty member in the School of Law.
17He served as Dean of the School of Law from 1985 until 1993, was
18appointed interim provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for
19Academic Affairs in 1993, was named a Distinguished Service
20Professor in 1994, was elected interim Chancellor by the board
21of trustees in 1995 and he became the university's 17th
22Chancellor in 1996; and

23WHEREAS, Chancellor Nordenberg has been an outstanding person
24to lead the University of Pittsburgh; and

25WHEREAS, In addition to providing strong leadership and
26guidance to help the university become one of the country's
27leading institutions of higher education, Chancellor Nordenberg
28has been extensively involved within the western Pennsylvania
29community, serving on numerous boards and engaging in a wide
30range of civic activities; therefore be it

1RESOLVED, That the Senate designate March 18, 2014, as "Pitt
2Day" in Pennsylvania and commend Chancellor Nordenberg for his
3leadership of the University of Pittsburgh.
