A RESOLUTION

 

1Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the
2American Cancer Society and congratulating it on its many
3milestones in researching the disease.

4WHEREAS, In 1913, 15 physicians and businessmen in New York
5City, who were determined to raise awareness about cancer,
6founded the American Society for the Control of Cancer, later
7renamed the American Cancer Society (ACS); and

8WHEREAS, In 1947, the first successful chemotherapy treatment
9for cancer was discovered by ACS researcher Sidney Farber, M.D.;
10and

11WHEREAS, In 1971, the "War on Cancer," in which the ACS plays
12a leading role, began upon the passage of the National Cancer
13Act, considered the most dramatic piece of health legislation
14ever enacted; and

15WHEREAS, In 1976, the California Division of ACS hosted the
16first Great American Smokeout® event to help nearly 1 million
 

1smokers quit for the day; and

2WHEREAS, In 1997, the ACS launched the first 24/7 cancer 
3information call center that now provides free information and 
4support to nearly 1 million people facing cancer each year; and

5WHEREAS, In 2003, ACS research confirmed the link between
6obesity and many types of cancer; and

7WHEREAS, In 2012, the United States celebrated a 20% decline
8in cancer death rates; and

9WHEREAS, On May 22, 2013, the American Cancer Society will be
10celebrating its 100th anniversary; therefore be it

11RESOLVED, That the Senate congratulate the American Cancer 
12Society for its commitment to research and public service on its 
13100th anniversary.
