A RESOLUTION
1Designating May 11, 2013, as "Letter Carrier Food Drive Day" in
2Pennsylvania and commending the National Association of
3Letter Carriers for its humanitarian efforts to eliminate
4hunger.
5WHEREAS, On Saturday, May 11, 2013, the National Association
6of Letter Carriers will conduct the 21st annual NALC "Stamp Out
7Hunger" food drive to combat hunger; and
8WHEREAS, This is the largest one-day food drive in the
9nation, which is held in all 50 states and territories of the
10United States; and
11WHEREAS, On that day, letter carriers will collect
12nonperishable donations as they deliver mail along their postal
13routes; and
14WHEREAS, The food will be collected in over 10,000
15communities by letter carriers and other volunteers; and
16WHEREAS, Donations will be delivered to food banks, pantries
17and shelters that serve the area where the donations are
1collected; and
2WHEREAS, The summer months are a particularly critical time
3when donations and supplies are low, and millions of children's
4school lunch programs are suspended until fall and their
5families must find alternate sources of nutrition; and
6WHEREAS, Letter carriers see these families every day as they
7deliver the mail and this food drive is one way to help
8alleviate their plight; and
9WHEREAS, Postal patrons are encouraged to participate by
10leaving donations by their mailboxes on May 11; and
11WHEREAS, Cosponsors of this year's drive include the United
12States Postal Service, the Campbell Soup Company, Valpak, Inc.,
13the Feeding America organization, Valassis, Inc., local United
14Ways, the AFL-CIO, AARP and America's Second Harvest food bank
15network; and
16WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1993, the nationwide drive
17has collected and delivered over three-quarters of a billion
18pounds of food to help hungry families, and last year carriers
19collected more than 70 million pounds of food, which is the
20ninth consecutive year the effort has exceeded 70 million
21pounds; therefore be it
22RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 11, 2013, as "Letter
23Carrier Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
24RESOLVED, That the National Association of Letter Carriers
25and its cosponsors be commended for their humanitarian efforts
26to stamp out hunger; and be it further
27RESOLVED, That the citizens of this Commonwealth be commended
28for their past participation in this food drive and encouraged
29to generously contribute to this year's effort to help feed the
30hungry.
