A RESOLUTION
1Recognizing March 2013 as "Women's History Month" in
2Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, Women of every race, class and ethnic background
4have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of
5this nation in countless ways; and
6WHEREAS, Women have played and continue to play a critical
7economic, cultural and social role in every sphere of the life
8of this nation by constituting a significant portion of the
9labor force working inside and outside the home; and
10WHEREAS, Women have played a unique role throughout the
11history of this nation by providing the majority of the
12volunteer labor force; and
13WHEREAS, Women were particularly important in the
14establishment of early charitable, philanthropic and cultural
15institutions in this nation; and
16WHEREAS, Women of every race, class and ethnic background
1served as early leaders in the forefront of every major
2progressive social change movement; and
3WHEREAS, Women have been leaders, not only in securing the
4rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the
5abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial
6labor movement and the civil rights movement, all of which
7created a fair and more just society for all; and
8WHEREAS, Lisa Baker, Lisa M. Boscola, Shirley M. Kitchen,
9Judith L. Schwank, Christine M. Tartaglione, Patricia H. Vance,
10Kim L. Ward and LeAnna M. Washington have earned recognition for
11public service as members of the Senate of this Commonwealth,
12comprising 16% of its membership; and
13WHEREAS, Louise Williams Bishop, Karen Boback, Michele
14Brooks, Rosemary M. Brown, Vanessa Lowery Brown, Michelle F.
15Brownlee, Becky Corbin, Linda Schlegel Culver, Mary Jo Daley,
16Margo L. Davidson, Tina M. Davis, Madeleine Dean, Pamela A.
17DeLissio, Sheryl M. Delozier, Maria P. Donatucci, Mindy Fee,
18Mauree Gingrich, Marcia M. Hahn, Julie Harhart, Kate Harper,
19Susan C. Helm, Patty Kim, Deberah Kula, Sandra Major, Erin C.
20Molchany, Phyllis Mundy, Donna Oberlander, Cherelle L. Parker,

2Emeritus of the Superior Court, Kate Ford Elliott; Superior
3Court Judge Cheryl Lynn Allen; Superior Court Judge Mary Jane
4Bowes; Superior Court Judge Christine L. Donohue; Superior Court
5Judge Susan Peikes Gantman; Superior Court Judge Anne E.
6Lazarus; Superior Court Judge Sallie Updyke Mundy; Superior
7Court Judge Judith Ference Olson; Superior Court Judge Paula
8Francisco Ott; and Superior Court Judge Jacqueline O. Shogan;
9Commonwealth Court Judge Anne Covey; Commonwealth Court Judge

14women who hold prominent positions in State government; and
15WHEREAS, In 1987, and each successive year thereafter, the
16Congress of the United States has declared March as "National
17Women's History Month"; and
18WHEREAS, The National Women's History Month theme, "Women's
19Education-Women's Empowerment: Women Inspiring Innovation
20through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology,
21Engineering and Mathematics," honors generations of women who
22throughout American history have used their intelligence,
23imagination, sense of wonder and tenacity to make extraordinary
24contributions to the fields of science, technology, engineering
25and mathematics; therefore be it
26RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize March 2013 as "Women's
27History Month" in Pennsylvania.
