AN ACT

 

1Designating a portion of U.S. Route 1, City Avenue in
2Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties from its intersection
3with Presidential Boulevard to its intersection with Monument
4Road as Ed Bradley Way.

5The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
6hereby enacts as follows:

7Section 1. Ed Bradley Way.

8(a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as
9follows:

10(1) Mr. Ed Bradley was born in Philadelphia and
11graduated from Saint Thomas More Catholic Boys High School in
12West Philadelphia in 1959.

13(2) Mr. Bradley graduated from Cheyney State College,
14now Cheyney University, in 1964 with a degree in education
15and his first job was teaching sixth grade at William B. Mann
16Elementary School in Philadelphia.

17(3) Mr. Bradley started reporting the news at WDAS-FM
18and, in 1971, this led him to a full-time job at WCBS in New

1York.

2(4) In 1972, Mr. Bradley volunteered to be transferred
3to Saigon to cover the Vietnam War in Vietnam and Cambodia,
4where he was injured by a mortar round.

5(5) In 1976, Mr. Bradley became the first African-
6American White House television correspondent for CBS News.

7(6) In 1981, Mr. Bradley joined the television program
860 Minutes, where, over the course of his 26 years on the 
9program, he did over 500 stories.

10(7) Mr. Bradley also hosted the Peabody award-winning
11program "Jazz at Lincoln Center" on National Public Radio for
12more than ten years, until his death in 2006.

13(b) Designation.--The portion of U.S. Route 1, City Avenue
14in Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties from its intersection
15with Presidential Boulevard to its intersection with Monument
16Road is hereby designated as Ed Bradley Way.

17(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
18maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to
19traffic in both directions.

20Section 2. Effective date.

21This act shall take effect immediately.
