A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating the month of November 2014 as "Infant Safe Sleep
2Month" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, The children of Pennsylvania are our most important
4resource and the very foundation of the future of our
5Commonwealth; and

6WHEREAS, Thousands of infants in the United States die each
7year in preventable tragedies because they are placed in unsafe
8sleeping environments; and

9WHEREAS, In April 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics
10Task Force on Infant Sleep Position recommended that infants be
11placed on their backs to sleep; and

12WHEREAS, The safest sleeping environment for babies is alone
13on their backs in an empty crib with a tightly fitted sheet and
14sufficient sleepwear; and

1WHEREAS, The National Institute of Child Health and Human
2Development's website provides parents, grandparents, relatives
3and day-care providers access to resources containing
4information about providing babies with safe sleep environments;
5and

6WHEREAS, The month of November is an opportunity to inform or
7remind all caregivers to check infant sleep environments to help
8prevent needless tragedies; therefore be it

9RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
10month of November 2014 as "Infant Safe Sleep Month" in
11Pennsylvania.
