INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 5, 2014
A RESOLUTION
1Recognizing Tuesday, May 6, 2014, as "The Salvation Army Day in
2Harrisburg" and commending The Salvation Army in Pennsylvania
3for its legacy of service to the people of this Commonwealth.
4WHEREAS, The Salvation Army in Pennsylvania is a faith-based,
5comprehensive human services organization that has been
6assisting individuals across this Commonwealth since 1879; and
7WHEREAS, The mission of The Salvation Army is to share its
8faith and meet human needs in accordance with this faith without
9discrimination; and
10WHEREAS, In accordance with its mission, The Salvation Army
11takes a holistic approach to providing assistance to
12individuals, families and communities by simultaneously
13addressing physical, emotional, economic and spiritual needs;
1and
2WHEREAS, The Salvation Army delivers a wide array of services
3to residents of this Commonwealth, including hot meals,
4counseling, early childhood development, after-school programs,
5mentoring, disaster relief, drug rehabilitation, job training,
6activities for senior citizens and music and arts programming;
7and
8WHEREAS, The Salvation Army provides assistance to
9Pennsylvanians in every zip code through its 82 Corps community
10centers located across this Commonwealth. The Salvation Army
11aided more than 800,000 individuals and served more than 1.2
12million meals within the past year in Pennsylvania; and
13WHEREAS, The Salvation Army has long been a lifeline to
14residents of this Commonwealth, providing vital services in
15times of need such as during the economic recession and recent
16winter storms; and
17WHEREAS, Every two years, members of The Salvation Army from
18around this Commonwealth assemble at the State Capitol in
19Harrisburg to meet with State legislators. The purpose of this
20biennial visit is to update legislators on The Salvation Army's
21programs and advise them about constituent needs in their
22respective districts. This event is also an opportunity for
23legislators to meet their local Salvation Army leaders and
24witness the reach and scope of this organization's services to
25Pennsylvanians; and
26WHEREAS, The Salvation Army's next biennial event, entitled
27The Salvation Army Day in Harrisburg will occur on Tuesday, May
286, 2014; therefore be it
29RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
30Tuesday, May 6, 2014, as "The Salvation Army Day in Harrisburg"
1and commend The Salvation Army in Pennsylvania for its legacy of
2service to the people of this Commonwealth.
