A RESOLUTION
1Designating May 2014 as "Community Action Month" in
2Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, Community action agencies were created when the
4Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 (Public Law 88-452, 42 U.S.C. §
52701 et seq.) was signed into law; and
6WHEREAS, Community action agencies have a 50-year history of
7promoting self-sufficiency for individuals with limited income;
8and
9WHEREAS, Community action agencies have made an essential
10contribution to individuals and families in Pennsylvania by
11providing them with innovative and cost-effective programs; and
12WHEREAS, Community action agencies are needed as major
13participants in the reform of the welfare system as we know it;
14and
15WHEREAS, Welfare reform in Pennsylvania has benefited from
1the Commonwealth's partnership with community action agencies;
2and
3WHEREAS, Low-income Pennsylvanians continue to need
4opportunities to improve their lives and their living conditions
5in order that all citizens are able to live in dignity; and
6WHEREAS, This Commonwealth and the rest of the nation must
7continue to promote economic security by providing support and
8opportunities for all citizens in need of assistance; therefore
9be it
10RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in honor of the
1150th Anniversary of Community Action, designate May 2014 as
12"Community Action Month" in Pennsylvania in recognition of the
13hard work and dedication of community action agencies in this
14Commonwealth.
