A RESOLUTION
1Honoring the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez.
2WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez is widely regarded as one of the
3greatest civil rights and labor leaders of our time, reclaiming
4dignity for people marginalized by society; and
5WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Mr. Chavez, the National
6Farm Workers Association, now the United Farm Workers, was
7created in 1962 to advance the plight of farm workers; and
8WHEREAS, Through Mr. Chavez's persistence, hard work and
9willingness to sacrifice, he proved that workers could maintain
10self-respect during their struggle for justice using only
11nonviolent means to promote their cause; and
12WHEREAS, Due to the sacrificial nature of Mr. Chavez's
13dedication to "La Causa" or The Cause, the movement succeeded in
14bringing awareness to the struggles of farm workers, encouraging
15better pay and working conditions; and
16WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez further fought for farm workers' rights
1against the dangers of pesticides, which adversely affected not
2only workers' health, but the food and land on which it was
3grown; and
4WHEREAS, President Bill Clinton honored Mr. Chavez with the
5posthumous presentation of the highest civilian honor, the Medal
6of Freedom, on August 8, 1994; and
7WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez is considered to be one of the most
8important Latino leaders in American history; and
9WHEREAS, The leadership, teachings and principals of Mr.
10Chavez remain firmly ensconced in the annals of history;
11therefore be it
12RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life
13and legacy of Cesar Chavez on the occasion of the 87th
14anniversary of his birth, March 31, 2014.
