A RESOLUTION
1Commemorating the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Borough of
2Slatington.
3WHEREAS, In the 1730s, Nicholas Kern acquired 500 acres in
4the area that would later become Slatington, which at the time
5was occupied by the Lenni-Lenape Native Americans; and
6WHEREAS, In 1844, slate was discovered in the ground beneath
7the land, which was a big boon to the area which continued to
8flourish after the opening of a canal and the expansion of the
9railroad; and
10WHEREAS, In August of 1864, Slatington became incorporated
11into this Commonwealth as the Borough of Slatington; and
12WHEREAS, Since its incorporation, Slatington became one of
13the top producers of slate from 1847, when the first slate
14factory was built, until after World War I, when the industry
15began to slow; and
1WHEREAS, Currently, the borough is home to more than 4,000
2people, covers approximately 1.3 square miles of land and is
3home to the headquarters for Penn Big Bed Slate Company; and
4WHEREAS, Slatington is also home to the Fireman's Drinking
5Fountain and Slatington Historic District, which are both listed
6on the National Register of Historical Places; and
7WHEREAS, The Slatington Sesquicentennial Committee, the
8official committee of the Borough of Slatington commemorating
9the sesquicentennial, is celebrating the history of the
10community with activities that will pay homage to those who
11lived, worked and volunteered in the borough; and
12WHEREAS, The year of celebration has just kicked off the
13festivities beginning on August 24, 2013, with a celebration at
14the Seventh Street Park; therefore be it
15RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
16sesquicentennial anniversary of the Borough of Slatington.
