A RESOLUTION

 

1Congratulating the Temple University Kornberg School of
2Dentistry on its 150th anniversary.

3WHEREAS, In the fall of 1862, Dr. John Hugh McQuillen
4resigned from the position of chair of operative dentistry and
5physiology at the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery, the
6only dental school in the State; and

7WHEREAS, Seeing that for a population of a bit more than
8500,000, only 114 men were practicing dentistry and of those
9only 18 had degrees, Dr. McQuillen began preparations for a
10second dental school in Philadelphia; and

11WHEREAS, Dr. McQuillen's vision that competition and expanded
12study facilities would increase interest in dentistry locally
13and even in the world, he persuaded the General Assembly to pass
14enabling legislation to create the Philadelphia Dental College,

1which legislation was signed by Governor Andrew Curtain on April
218, 1863; and

3WHEREAS, Philadelphia Dental College began operations on the
4first Monday in November 1863 and Dr. McQuillen served as Dean
5with 11 students enrolled; and

6WHEREAS, The first Annual Commencement of the Philadelphia
7Dental College was held on February 29, 1864, and over the next
8six years growth was so rapid that 100 students graduated,
9making Philadelphia the country's center of dental education;
10and

11WHEREAS, Dr. McQuillen died suddenly at the age of 53 in
121879; and

13WHEREAS, Under Dr. McQuillen's leadership Philadelphia Dental
14College was recognized as a great center for dental education
15throughout the world; and

16WHEREAS, By the early 20th century, dental colleges had
17started to become affiliated with universities, and Temple
18University founder Dr. Russell H. Conwell encouraged the
19association of the Philadelphia Dental College with Temple
20University, and the Board of Trustees of the Philadelphia Dental
21College voted for the affiliation which was formally recognized
22in 1907; and

23WHEREAS, Philadelphia Dental College officially became known
24as Temple University School of Dentistry in 1913 and, after
25World War II, began to look for a new location and settled on
26the current North Broad Street location; and

27WHEREAS, In 2007, in honor of Maurice Kornberg, a 1921
28graduate of Temple Dental School, the school was renamed the
29Temple University Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry; and

30WHEREAS, One hundred fifty years ago, Dr. McQuillen's notion

1of building a dental school with a more structured curriculum
2teaching both the arts and sciences of dentistry came to life
3and the pioneer school he founded, then known as the
4Philadelphia Dental college, has influenced the lives of
5millions, educating dentists from around the world and among
6them new generations of pioneers who, in turn, brought
7"American" dentistry to their homelands; therefore be it

8RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the 150th
9anniversary of Temple University Maurice H. Kornberg School of
10Dentistry; and be it further

11RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dean
12Amid Ismail, BDS, MPH, MBA, DrPH, Dean, Maurice H. Kornberg
13School of Dentistry, 3223 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA
