1Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
2act relating to the public school system, including certain
3provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
4schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
5laws relating thereto," in terms and courses of study,
6providing for instruction on the responsible use of social
7media.

8The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
9hereby enacts as follows:

10Section 1. The act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), known
11as the Public School Code of 1949, is amended by adding a
12section to read:

13Section 1552.1. Instruction on the Responsible Use of Social
14Media.--(a) Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, each
15school district shall incorporate instruction on the responsible
16use of social media into the technology education curriculum for
17students in grades six (6) through eight (8) as part of the
18school district's observance of the State standards for
19business, computer and information technology courses.

20(b) The instruction shall provide students with information

1on all of the following:

2(1) The purpose and acceptable use of various social media
3platforms.

4(2) Social media behavior that ensures cyber safety, cyber
5security and cyber ethics.

6(3) Potential negative consequences, such as cyber bullying,
7of failing to use various social media platforms responsibly.

8(c) The Department of Education shall provide school
9districts with sample learning activities and resources designed
10to promote the responsible use of social media.

11Section 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
