AN ACT

 

1Designating a bridge that carries State Route 153 over the
2Bennett Branch in Huston Township, Clearfield County, as the
3Huston Township Veterans Memorial Bridge; and<- designating
4U.S. Route 219 in Johnsonburg Borough, Elk County, from the
5intersection of State Route 1009, Center Street, starting at
6roadway segment 0502 offset 0000 to the intersection of State
7Route 1009, Center Street, ending at roadway segment 0522
8offset 1159, as the Veterans of Johnsonburg Bypass.;<- 
9designating a portion of Pennsylvania Route 1001 between 
10Rhawn Street, 0100/0000 and Kendrick Street, 0100/2784 in the 
11City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, as the Firefighter 
12Daniel Sweeney Memorial Highway; designating a portion of 
13Pennsylvania Route 611 between Maple Avenue and Meetinghouse 
14Road, in Montgomery County, as the Lieutenant Joseph C. Park 
15II Memorial Highway; designating a portion of State Route 272 
16in Lancaster County, south of State Route 372 and before 
17Osceola Road, as the Staff Sergeant Keith A. Bennett Highway; 
18and designating a portion of U.S. Route 1, City Avenue in 
19Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties from its intersection 
20with Presidential Boulevard to its intersection with Monument 
21Road as Ed Bradley Way.

22The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
23hereby enacts as follows:

24Section 1. Huston Township Veterans Memorial Bridge.

1(a) Findings.--

2(1) Huston Township, Clearfield County, has been home to
3many valiant military veterans who have given their lives in
4defense of the United States.

5(2) The elected Board of Supervisors of Huston Township 
6has endorsed designating this bridge in honor of those
7township residents who have made the ultimate sacrifice for
8our nation over the years.

9(b) Designation.--The bridge that carries State Route 153
10over the Bennett Branch in Huston Township, Clearfield County,
11is hereby designated as the Huston Township Veterans Memorial
12Bridge.

13(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
14maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to
15traffic in both directions on the bridge.

16Section 2. Veterans of Johnsonburg Bypass.

17(a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares that
18the Borough of Johnsonburg has been home through the years to
19veterans, both living and deceased, who have served our nation
20valiantly.

21(b) Designation.--U.S. Route 219 in Johnsonburg Borough, Elk
22County, from the intersection of State Route 1009, Center
23Street, starting at roadway segment 0502 offset 0000 to the
24intersection of State Route 1009, Center Street, ending at
25roadway segment 0522 offset 1159, is hereby designated as the
26Veterans of Johnsonburg Bypass.

27(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
28maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to
29traffic in both directions.

30Section 3. Firefighter Daniel Sweeney Memorial Highway.<-

1(a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds as follows:

2(1) Firefighter Daniel Sweeney was a member of Ladder 10
3Fire Company and resided at Tabor and Fuller in the heart of
4Fox Chase in the neighborhood where his parents reside.

5(2) Mr. Sweeney made the ultimate sacrifice on Monday,
6April 9, 2012, while fighting a five-alarm fire in
7Kensington. In the fire, he lost his life as a result of a
8collapsing wall and roof. He demonstrated true courage and
9heroism while in the line of duty.

10(3) Mr. Sweeney is survived by his father, David, who is
11a retired fire captain, his mother, Marian, his three
12sisters, Suzanne Swedlige, Sarah Sweeney and Deborah Sweeney,
13his brother-in-law, David Swedlige and his niece and
14godchild, Stacey Swedlige.

15(b) Designation.--The section of Pennsylvania Route 1001
16between Rhawn Street, 0100/0000 and Kendrick Street, 0100/2784
17in the City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, is hereby
18designated the Firefighter Daniel Sweeney Memorial Highway.

19(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
20maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to
21traffic in both directions on the highway.

22Section 4. Lieutenant Joseph C. Park II Memorial Highway.

23(a) Findings.--

24(1) Lt. Park was born August 31, 1946, and lived in
25Horsham, Pennsylvania.

26(2) Lt. Park attended Hatboro-Horsham High School and
27Valley Forge Military Academy before briefly attending The
28Pennsylvania State University.

29(3) Lt. Park was a member of the polo team at the Valley
30Forge Military Academy and attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

1(4) Lt. Park proudly and courageously served in the
2United States Army during the Vietnam War.

3(5) Lt. Park was killed in Vietnam on March 28, 1968,
4from a hostile gunshot wound.

5(6) Lt. Park was awarded the Purple Heart, National
6Defense Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Service Medal for his
7military service.

8(b) Designation.--The portion of Pennsylvania Route 611 in
9Montgomery County, between Maple Avenue and Meetinghouse Road,
10is hereby designated as the Lieutenant Joseph C. Park II
11Memorial Highway.

12(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
13maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to
14traffic in both directions on the highway.

15Section 5. Staff Sergeant Keith A. Bennett Highway.

16(a) Findings and declarations.--The General Assembly finds
17and declares:

18(1) Staff Sergeant Keith A. Bennett was a proud 1991
19graduate of Solanco High School.

20(2) As a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard,
21Staff Sergeant Bennett was killed in action in Iraq on
22December 11, 2005.

23(b) Designation.--The section of State Route 272 in
24Lancaster County, south of State Route 372 and before Osceola
25Road, is hereby designated the Staff Sergeant Keith A. Bennett
26Highway.

27(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
28maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to
29traffic in both directions on the highway.

30Section 6. Ed Bradley Way.

1(a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as
2follows:

3(1) Mr. Ed Bradley was born in Philadelphia and
4graduated from Saint Thomas More Catholic Boys High School in
5West Philadelphia in 1959.

6(2) Mr. Bradley graduated from Cheyney State College,
7now Cheyney University, in 1964 with a degree in education
8and his first job was teaching sixth grade at William B. Mann
9Elementary School in Philadelphia.

10(3) Mr. Bradley started reporting the news at WDAS-FM
11and, in 1971, this led him to a full-time job at WCBS in New
12York.

13(4) In 1972, Mr. Bradley volunteered to be transferred
14to Saigon to cover the Vietnam War in Vietnam and Cambodia,
15where he was injured by a mortar round.

16(5) In 1976, Mr. Bradley became the first African-
17American White House television correspondent for CBS News.

18(6) In 1981, Mr. Bradley joined the television program
1960 Minutes, where, over the course of his 26 years on the
20program, he did over 500 stories.

21(7) Mr. Bradley also hosted the Peabody award-winning
22program "Jazz at Lincoln Center" on National Public Radio for
23more than ten years, until his death in 2006.

24(b) Designation.--The portion of U.S. Route 1, City Avenue
25in Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties from its intersection
26with Presidential Boulevard to its intersection with Monument
27Road is hereby designated as Ed Bradley Way.

28(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
29maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to
30traffic in both directions.

1Section 3<- 7. Effective date.

2This act shall take effect <-in 60 days. as follows:

3(1) Section 5 and this section shall take effect
4immediately.

5(2) The remainder of this act shall take effect in 60
6days.
