A RESOLUTION

Encouraging participation in the "Hunters Sharing the Harvest"

2

program in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Since 1991, the Pennsylvania Hunters Sharing the

4

Harvest program, www.sharedeer.org, has effectively brought the

5

hunting public together to compassionately serve their

6

communities and has been providing venison to regional food bank

7

systems to benefit needy citizens throughout this Commonwealth;

8

and

9

WHEREAS, The overabundance of deer in certain regions of this

10

Commonwealth has impacted our agricultural community, forest

11

industry, natural biodiversity and overall quality of life and

12

safety for many citizens; and

13

WHEREAS, For more than 20 years this unique program has

14

provided an average of more than 85,000 pounds annually of this

15

nutritious, high-protein meat to citizens needing food

16

assistance through local area food banks, and now is calling on

17

all Pennsylvanians to assist in this program; and

18

WHEREAS, Further assistance is needed to provide funds to

offset the processing costs for venison and further extend

2

delivery systems to more quickly and efficiently reach needy

3

recipients; and

4

WHEREAS, The General Assembly, Pennsylvania Game Commission

5

and the Department of Agriculture and the Department of

6

Conservation and Natural Resources have supported these efforts

7

and now join with more than 62 corporate and organizational

8

program partners, including Safari Club International,

9

Pennsylvania Chapters, Friends of the National Rifle Association

10

(NRA), the Pennsylvania Association of Regional Food Banks and

11

the Pennsylvania Association of Meat Processors in encouraging

12

hunters to share their harvest through Pennsylvania's Hunters

13

Sharing the Harvest program; therefore be it

14

RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage the citizens of this

15

Commonwealth and especially individuals and groups that are most

16

concerned in supporting Hunters Sharing the Harvest in

17

Pennsylvania and extend its appreciation to the program's public

18

partners for joining in this challenge to distribute this

19

valuable component of our wildlife resources and fight hunger;

20

and be it further

21

RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage the Department of

22

Agriculture and others to continue providing information via

23

Internet websites and other means about donating big game and

24

other lawfully taken wildlife via Hunters Sharing the Harvest to

25

food banks, county and local government, municipalities,

26

sportsman's clubs and meat processors throughout this

27

Commonwealth and other individuals, nonprofit agencies,

28

charitable organizations and businesses requesting this

29

information.
