A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the Duquesne University School of Law on the

2

100th anniversary of its founding.

3

WHEREAS, On Monday, September 25, 1911, the Duquesne

4

University School of Law opened its doors, holding its first

5

classes in the George Building on Fourth Avenue in the City of

6

Pittsburgh; and

7

WHEREAS, The first professional school of the newly chartered

8

Duquesne University, the School of Law sought "to prepare young

9

men, especially those otherwise engaged in business, not only

10

for the preliminary examinations of the State Board of

11

Examiners, but also for entrance into other professions or for

12

admissions to higher courses of study"; and

13

WHEREAS, The Honorable Joseph M. Swearingen, Judge of the

14

Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, became the first Dean

15

of the law school; John E. Laughlin, a well-known lawyer, became

16

Vice-Dean and faculty members included William H. Lacey, P. A.

17

McDermott, A. B. Reid and J. C. Bane; and

18

WHEREAS, In December 1913, Oscar G. Meyer is the first law

school student to pass the State bar exam; he opens his own

2

office even before graduation; and

3

WHEREAS, In June 1914, the law faculty confers 12 bachelor of

4

law degrees on Francis Bernard Cohen, John Robb Clarke, Thomas

5

Francis Dougherty, Paul John Friday, Henry John Glem, Bernard

6

James McKenna, Oscar Gregory Meyer, Edward Michael Murphy,

7

Frederick William Ries, Jr., Henry Jacob Schmitt, Henry James

8

Thomas and Francis Albert Wolf; and

9

WHEREAS, In September 1914, the entire first class passes the

10

State bar exam; and

11

WHEREAS, There were many other important firsts in the School

12

of Law: in 1914, Mrs. M. Murphy becomes the first woman to

13

matriculate for the study of law in the university; in 1924,

14

Anna Louise Schultz is the first female graduate of the law

15

school; and in 1925, Theron B. Hamilton becomes the first

16

African-American graduate of the law school; and

17

WHEREAS, One hundred years later, Duquesne's Law School is

18

respected regionally and has gained increasing national notice

19

with its rank among the nation's top 100 by Super Lawyers and as

20

a "Best Value" by National Jurist; and

21

WHEREAS, Thousands of men and women have passed through the

22

doors of the Duquesne University School of Law en route to

23

distinguished careers, more than 7,500 graduates are practicing

24

in every field of law, its alumni work as corporate counsel to

25

Fortune 500 companies and small entrepreneurial ventures, are

26

directors of government agencies and public interest

27

organizations, serve as district attorneys and public defenders

28

and teach at law schools throughout the United States; and

29

WHEREAS, An impressive number of Duquesne University School

30

of Law graduates are judges on the Federal, State and local

levels, including the highest courts, intermediate appellate

2

courts and trial courts in more than 20 states; and

3

WHEREAS, Among all law schools in Pennsylvania, Duquesne has

4

produced a significant number of judges seated on the Superior

5

Court, Commonwealth Court and courts of common pleas; and

6

Duquesne Law alumni have also served as judges of the United

7

States Court of Appeals and the Federal District Courts; and

8

WHEREAS, The Duquesne University School of Law will hold its

9

Black Tie Centennial Gala on Saturday, September 24th to

10

celebrate its past, present and future; therefore be it

11

RESOLVED, That the Senate congratulate the Duquesne

12

University School of Law on the 100th anniversary of its

13

founding.
