A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the week of April 10 through 16, 2011, as "Library

2

Week 2011" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a

4

national observance sponsored by the American Library

5

Association and libraries across the country each April; and

6

WHEREAS, National Library Week celebrates the contributions

7

of libraries, librarians and library workers throughout the

8

United States; and

9

WHEREAS, All types of libraries across the country

10

participate, including school, public, academic and special

11

libraries; and

12

WHEREAS, The 2011 theme, "Create your own story @ your

13

library®," emphasizes that people can create new stories for

14

themselves, whether it is by opening a book and exploring

15

distant lands or by learning how to use new technologies to find

16

a job; and

WHEREAS, Families can spend hours together exploring their

2

local library for free, finding a wide variety of reading

3

materials that will rekindle memories as well as spark new

4

interests; and

5

WHEREAS, Libraries provide books, magazines, manuscripts,

6

forms and other documents for children and adults that otherwise

7

may not be available to them; and

8

WHEREAS, Libraries host a variety of programs that support

9

entrepreneurship, retraining and lifelong learning, teach all

10

forms of literacy and promote continuing education; and

11

WHEREAS, Libraries offer a world of knowledge and opportunity

12

to residents in local communities throughout this Commonwealth;

13

and

14

WHEREAS, Libraries are supported by dedicated staff that help

15

visitors take advantage of the resources available to them; and

16

WHEREAS, Librarians, who are valuable community resources,

17

help people of all ages and backgrounds find and interpret the

18

information they need to live, learn and work; and

19

WHEREAS, According to a 2009 survey by the American Library

20

Association, 25.4 million Americans used public libraries more

21

than 20 times in the prior year compared to 20.3 million

22

Americans in 2006; and

23

WHEREAS, According to the American Library Association, many

24

public libraries help patrons complete online job applications,

25

provide access to job databases and other online resources and

26

civil service exam materials and offer software or other

27

resources to help patrons create resumes and other employment

28

materials; and

29

WHEREAS, "National Library Week" encourages all residents to

30

visit their local library to take advantage of the wonderful

resources available to them and to create their own story;

therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of April 10

4

through 16, 2011, as "Library Week 2011" in Pennsylvania.
