| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the life and contributions of William H. Gray III and |
2 | recognizing the impact of historically black colleges and |
3 | universities. |
4 | WHEREAS, William H. Gray III's influential leadership has |
5 | spanned across a multitude of fields, including the ministry, |
6 | government, education and business; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Mr. Gray served as the pastor of Bright Hope Church |
8 | in Philadelphia for 35 years; and |
9 | WHEREAS, A few years after becoming pastor at Bright Hope |
10 | Church, he was elected to represent Pennsylvania's Second |
11 | Congressional District in the United States House of |
12 | Representatives; and |
13 | WHEREAS, During his 12-year tenure as a congressman, Mr. Gray |
14 | rose quickly in leadership, becoming Chair of the Budget |
15 | Committee, Chair of the Democratic Caucus and Majority Whip; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Mr. Gray later served as the Special Advisor on |

1 | Haiti during President Bill Clinton's administration; and |
2 | WHEREAS, After leaving Congress, Mr. Gray served as President |
3 | and CEO of the United Negro College Fund, and under his |
4 | leadership, the Fund reached record-breaking fundraising levels |
5 | and increased its educational assistance to minority students |
6 | and support of historically black colleges and universities; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Historically black colleges and universities have |
8 | played a valuable role in providing access to higher education |
9 | for minority students and in producing many of the nation's |
10 | leaders in both the public and private sectors; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Mr. Gray is the current Chairman of Gray Global |
12 | Strategies, Inc., a global business consulting and government |
13 | affairs strategies firm, and continues to provide leadership for |
14 | positive public policies; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Mr. Gray also currently serves on the board of |
16 | directors for a variety of companies including Dell, Inc., |
17 | JPMorgan Chase & Co., Pfizer, Inc., and Prudential Financial, |
18 | Inc.; and |
19 | WHEREAS, Mr. Gray is a committed servant and leader whose |
20 | life's work has affected the lives of countless people |
21 | worldwide; therefore be it |
22 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its |
23 | sincere appreciation and gratitude to William H. Gray III for |
24 | his unyielding dedication and contributions to his faith, his |
25 | community, his Commonwealth and his country; and be it further |
26 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to |
27 | William H. Gray III as a token of appreciation for his service. |
