A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and contributions of Mr. Joseph Vincent

2

Paterno and extending condolences to his family, friends and

3

colleagues.

4

WHEREAS, Lovingly known as "Joe Pa" amongst many of the

5

Nittany Lion faithful, Coach Paterno revolutionized the Penn

6

State football program by emphasizing academic excellence and

7

toughness both on and beyond the confines of the gridiron; and

8

WHEREAS, Joseph Vincent Paterno was the son of Italian

9

immigrants and was born on December 21, 1926, in Brooklyn, New

10

York; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Paterno attended the Brooklyn Preparatory School

2

and excelled in athletics, particularly in the sport of

3

football; and

4

WHEREAS, In 1945, Mr. Paterno graduated from Brooklyn

5

Preparatory School and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United

6

States Army; and

7

WHEREAS, Following his time in the military, Mr. Paterno

8

received and accepted an athletic scholarship to Brown

9

University; and

10

WHEREAS, In addition to studying English literature, Mr.

11

Paterno played the dual positions of quarterback and defensive

12

back for the Brown University Brown Bears; and

13

WHEREAS, Mr. Paterno attained a considerable amount of

14

success during his collegiate football career, including 14

15

total interceptions, a school record that continues to stand to

16

this very day; and 

17

WHEREAS, In 1950, Mr. Paterno graduated from Brown University

18

with both a degree and desire to make his mark in collegiate

19

sports; and

20

WHEREAS, Upon graduating from college, Mr. Paterno joined his

21

former Brown University football coach, Charles "Rip" Engle, in

22

the capacity of Assistant Coach at The Pennsylvania State

23

University; and

24

WHEREAS, In 1966, after faithfully serving in the role of

25

assistant coach for 16 years, Coach Paterno finally got the

26

opportunity to take over the reins of the Nittany Lion football

27

program and was named The Pennsylvania State University's 14th

28

Head Coach; and

29

WHEREAS, On September 17, 1966, Coach Paterno made his debut

30

as head coach and the Nittany Lions went on to beat the Maryland

Terrapins 15-7; and

2

WHEREAS, In 1968, Coach Paterno continued to significantly

3

impact the Nittany Lion football program by achieving an

4

unbeaten record of 11-0 and earning a trip to the 1968 Orange

5

Bowl, where the Nittany Lions defeated the Kansas Jayhawks

6

15-14; and

7

WHEREAS, During the subsequent 1969 season, Coach Paterno and

8

his Nittany Lions once again produced an unbeaten season of 12-0

9

and earned another invite to the Orange Bowl, where they emerged

10

victorious in a 10-3 win over the Missouri Tigers; and

11

WHEREAS, Coach Paterno continued to develop and revolutionize

12

The Pennsylvania State University football program, which

13

culminated in another unbeaten season of 13-0 in 1973; and

14

WHEREAS, Capping off the stellar 1973 season, The

15

Pennsylvania State University's star tailback, John Cappalletti,

16

became the deserving recipient of the illustrious Heisman Trophy

17

Award; and

18

WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure as head coach for the Nittany

19

Lions, Coach Paterno turned down multiple offers to coach

20

professional football, opting to direct his focus toward

21

building The Pennsylvania State University football program into

22

a perennial winner; and

23

WHEREAS, On November 6, 1976, Coach Paterno achieved the

24

milestone of scoring his 100th victory as the head coach of the

25

Nittany Lions in a decisive 41-20 win over the North Carolina

26

Tar Heels; and

27

WHEREAS, During the 1978 season, Coach Paterno and the

28

Nittany Lions finished the regular season 11-0, but fell short

29

to the Alabama Crimson Tide 14-7 in the Sugar Bowl; and

30

WHEREAS, In 1982, the Nittany Lions rose to the occasion by

defeating the Georgia Bulldogs by a score of 27-23 in the Sugar

2

Bowl, earning the school its first national championship under

3

Coach Paterno; and

4

WHEREAS, Returning to championship form in 1986, the Nittany

5

Lions went on to upset the overwhelmingly favored Miami

6

Hurricanes by a score of 14-10 in the Fiesta Bowl, earning Coach

7

Paterno his second national championship; and

8

WHEREAS, On September 5, 1987, Joe Pa achieved another

9

significant milestone, winning his 200th game in a 45-19 victory

10

over the Bowling Green Falcons; and

11

WHEREAS, During the 1993 season, Coach Paterno and the

12

Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten Conference, effectively

13

establishing themselves as a perennial powerhouse; and

14

WHEREAS, In 1994, Coach Paterno and the Nittany Lions once

15

again produced an unbeaten season of 12-0; and

16

WHEREAS, In recognition of Coach Paterno's contributions to

17

its institution and its football program, The Pennsylvania State

18

University broke ground for the Paterno Library at the school's

19

main campus; and

20

WHEREAS, Coach Paterno's longstanding investment in the

21

university both on and off the field was further underscored by

22

the millions of dollars which he and his family have donated

23

toward faculty positions, scholarships and university-related

24

building projects; and

25

WHEREAS, On September 12, 1998, Coach Paterno captured his

26

300th victory in the team's 48-3 win over the Bowling Green

27

Falcons, and earned the prestigious "Eddie Robinson Coach of the

28

Year Award"; and

29

WHEREAS, On October 7, 2001, Joe Pa achieved the

30

extraordinary feat of becoming the winningest coach in NCAA

Division I-A history, following a 29-27 victory over the Ohio

2

State Buckeyes; and

3

WHEREAS, Coach Paterno's 324 career victories surpassed that

4

of the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant; and

5

WHEREAS, In 2002, Joe Pa received the distinguished "Amos

6

Alonzo Stagg Award," which is awarded to those who exhibit

7

exemplary service and excel at advancing the best interests of

8

football; and

9

WHEREAS, In 2005, Coach Paterno led his team to an 11-1

10

record, a share of the Big Ten Conference Title and their first

11

Bowl Championship Series appearance in the Fed Ex Orange Bowl,

12

where they defeated the Florida State Seminoles by a score of

13

26-23; and

14

WHEREAS, In that same year, Joe Pa would be named the

15

National Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches

16

Association for an unprecedented fifth time, in addition to

17

being recognized for his outstanding coaching efforts by the

18

Associated Press, Bobby Dodd, Home Depot/ESPN, Maxwell Football

19

Club (George Munger), the Pigskin Club of Washington, DC, The

20

Sporting News and the Walter Camp Football Foundation; and

21

WHEREAS, In 2007, as an ultimate gesture of honor and

22

recognition, Coach Paterno was inducted into the College

23

Football Hall of Fame; and

24

WHEREAS, Coach Paterno and his family remained humble

25

benefactors in their many philanthropic pursuits, including the

26

Pennsylvania Special Olympics Summer Games; and

27

WHEREAS, In 2008, the Paternos were recognized for their many

28

selfless contributions by being inducted into the Pennsylvania

29

Special Olympics Hall of Fame; and

30

WHEREAS, In 2009, the Paternos continued their longstanding

spirit of generosity and investment in The Pennsylvania State

2

University by making a $1 million pledge to the Mount Nittany

3

Medical Center; and

4

WHEREAS, In that same year, Coach Paterno was also granted

5

the distinguished honor of receiving a "Lifetime of Achievement

6

Award" by the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association; and

7

WHEREAS, A National Collegiate Athletics Association Division

8

I-A Graduation Rates Report highlighted that The Pennsylvania

9

State University's football program earned an astonishing 89%

10

graduation rate and an 85% graduation success rate, which was

11

ranked first amongst AP top 25 teams; and

12

WHEREAS, On November 6, 2010, further solidifying an already

13

illustrious and iconic coaching career, Coach Paterno captured

14

his 400th victory in a 35-21 win over the Northwestern Wildcats;

15

and

16

WHEREAS, In 2011, the President of the National Collegiate

17

Athletic Association, Mark Emmert, presented Coach Paterno with

18

the distinguished "Gerald R. Ford Award," which honors those who

19

provide significant leadership and advocacy in the realm of

20

intercollegiate athletics; and

21

WHEREAS, On October 24, 2011, at age 84, Coach Paterno earned

22

his 409th and last victory as Head Coach of the Nittany Lions;

23

and

24

WHEREAS, Coach Joe Paterno was the deserving and humble

25

recipient of innumerable awards and honors and concluded his 61-

26

year tenure with the Nittany Lions as the winningest coach in

27

NCAA Division I-A history; and

28

WHEREAS, Sadly, on Sunday, January 22, 2012, icon and legend

29

Joseph Vincent Paterno succumbed to his battle with lung cancer

30

at the Mount Nittany Medical Center, located in State College,

Pennsylvania, at the age of 85; and

2

WHEREAS, Joseph Vincent Paterno left behind a winning legacy

3

both on and off the field in his many acts of philanthropy,

4

athletics and overall mentorship; therefore be it

5

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its

6

profound sorrow over the passing of Mr. Joseph Vincent Paterno

7

and extend its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and

8

colleagues; and be it further

9

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

10

Mrs. Suzanne Pohland Paterno at 830 McKee Street, State College,

11

PA 16803.
