A RESOLUTION

Memorializing the 100th anniversary of the Austin Flood that

2

occurred on September 30, 1911, in Austin, Potter County,

3

Pennsylvania.

4

WHEREAS, Austin Borough is holding a centennial celebration

5

from September 30 through October 2, 2011, memorializing the

6

Austin Flood tragedy; and

7

WHEREAS, On September 30, 1911, at approximately 2:30 p.m.,

8

the Bayless Dam burst and the floodwaters engulfed the town of

9

approximately 3,000 inhabitants, resulting in more than 80

10

deaths and leaving a mass of wreckage in its wake; and

11

WHEREAS, The Austin Flood was the second-worst flood disaster

12

in Pennsylvania history; and

13

WHEREAS, The Borough of Austin will be celebrating the 100th

14

anniversary of the Austin Flood during the week of September 30

15

through October 2, 2011, with various activities; therefore be

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives memorialize the

3

100th anniversary of the Austin Flood that occurred on September

4

30, 1911; and be it further

5

RESOLVED, That all residents of this Commonwealth be

6

encouraged to observe this historic event and, if possible, to

7

be a part of the festivities at Austin Borough, Potter County,

8

Pennsylvania, during the week of September 30 through October 2,

9

2011.
