INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 13, 2011  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating June 12, 2011, as "Alex's Lemonade Stand Day" in

2

Pennsylvania and encouraging all citizens to contribute to

3

the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and other pediatric

4

cancer research programs.

5

WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in

6

children under 15 years of age; and

7

WHEREAS, About 10,730 children are diagnosed with cancer in

8

the United States each year; and

9

WHEREAS, Due to advances in research, the childhood cancer

10

cure rate has climbed to about 80%; and

11

WHEREAS, Alexandra Scott was an extraordinary person who was

12

diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer,

13

two days before her first birthday; and

14

WHEREAS, In July 2000, at the age of four, Alex opened her

first lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer

2

research; and

3

WHEREAS, On August 1, 2004, Alex passed away at the age of

4

eight; and

5

WHEREAS, Since Alex's first lemonade stand in 2000, there

6

have been more than 4,000 Alex's Lemonade Stands held across

7

this nation; and

8

WHEREAS, The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation was created to

9

accept and manage donations from all over the world; and

10

WHEREAS, By June 2011, the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation

11

will have raised nearly $40 million for pediatric cancer

12

research, thereby far surpassing the $1 million monetary goal

13

established by Alex before she passed away; and

14

WHEREAS, Alex's efforts have garnered national and

15

international attention and have inspired hundreds of

16

individuals to donate to pediatric cancer research; and

17

WHEREAS, The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation continues to

18

raise awareness and financial support for research in childhood

19

cancers; and

20

WHEREAS, During the weekend of June 10 through 12, 2011,

21

volunteers across the country will host an Alex's Lemonade Stand

22

to support Alex's cause in the fight to find a cure for

23

childhood cancers; therefore be it

24

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June

25

12, 2011, as "Alex's Lemonade Stand Day" in Pennsylvania and

26

encourage all citizens to contribute to the Alex's Lemonade

27

Stand Foundation and other pediatric cancer research programs.
