A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

Commending the completion of the September 11th National

2

Memorial Trail and urging all Pennsylvanians to remember

3

those victims who lost their lives on that fateful day.

4

WHEREAS, September 11, 2001, was a day Americans will forever

5

remember because of the terrorist attacks that claimed nearly

6

3,000 lives at New York City's World Trade Center Ground Zero

7

site, the Pentagon in Virginia and the Flight 93 crash site in

8

Shanksville; and

9

WHEREAS, The September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance,

10

the National Park Service, the Department of Conservation and

11

Natural Resources, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, the Great

12

Allegheny Passage, the East Coast Greenway Alliance, the

Appalachian Mountain Club, the Susquehanna Appalachian Trail

2

Club, the Flight 93 National Memorial Advisory Commission, the

3

Garden of Reflection, the Pentagon Memorial Fund and other

4

dedicated volunteers are working together to establish a

5

1,100‑mile hiking, biking and driving trail to create a physical

6

linkage between the Flight 93 National Memorial, the World Trade

7

Center Ground Zero site and the Pentagon and to honor the

8

American heroes who tragically lost their lives on that fateful

9

day; and

10

WHEREAS, The first leg of the September 11th National

11

Memorial Trail is planned to extend from Virginia along the

12

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, follow the Potomac River to

13

Cumberland, Maryland, and then continue along the Great

14

Allegheny Passage until it connects to the Flight 93 National

15

Memorial site in Somerset County, which is the nation's official

16

national memorial dedicated to honoring the courageous actions

17

of 40 passengers and crew of Flight 93 who, while attempting to

18

thwart the plan of their terrorist attackers, were killed when

19

their hijacked plane crashed into a field in rural Somerset

20

County; and

21

WHEREAS, The second leg of the September 11th National

22

Memorial Trail is planned to extend from the Pentagon in

23

Virginia to the World Trade Center Ground Zero site in New York

24

City as part of the East Coast Greenway and include the Garden

25

of Reflection, the Commonwealth's official memorial dedicated to

26

remember the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001,

27

which is situated in Memorial Park amid the natural beauty and

28

historic farmland in Lower Makefield Township in Bucks County;

29

and

30

WHEREAS, The Garden of Reflection Memorial is a moving

tribute to the 2,973 victims who lost their lives on that

2

fateful day, including 18 residents of Bucks County, 58 other

3

residents of this Commonwealth and the 42 Pennsylvania children

4

who lost a parent in these horrific terrorist attacks; and

5

WHEREAS, The Garden of Reflection is designed to guide

6

visitors on a walking journey that leads from sorrowful

7

reminders of tragedy and grief toward luminous symbols of hope,

8

peace and celebration of life; and

9

WHEREAS, The third and final leg of the September 11th

10

National Memorial Trail is planned to stretch between the Flight

11

93 National Memorial site in Shanksville to the World Trade

12

Center Ground Zero site in New York City, thereby culminating in

13

a connecting trail among all of the noted September 11th sites

14

never to be broken; therefore be it

15

RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the House of

16

Representatives commend the September 11th National Memorial

17

Trail Alliance for the design and completion of the September

18

11th National Memorial Trail and urge all Pennsylvanians to

19

visit the Flight 93 Memorial and the Garden of Reflection

20

Memorial and to remember those victims who lost their lives as

21

the 10th anniversary of this horrific day approaches.
