A RESOLUTION

Honoring the 50th anniversary of the United States Peace Corps

2

and memorializing the United States Postal Service to issue a

3

postage stamp to benefit the Peace Corps.

4

WHEREAS, In 1961, President John F. Kennedy signed an

5

executive order to establish the United States Peace Corps; and

6

WHEREAS, Today, more than 200,000 current and former

7

volunteers in over 139 countries have collectively given over a

8

half century of service to the cause of peace; and

9

WHEREAS, On its 50th anniversary, the Peace Corps remains an

10

enduring symbol of our nation's commitment to encouraging

11

progress, creating opportunity and fostering mutual respect and

12

understanding throughout the world; and

13

WHEREAS, Peace Corps volunteers have worked to upgrade

14

primitive infrastructures, improve communications, educate

15

children and expand health services in villages, towns and

cities around the globe, representing a legacy of service that

2

has become a significant part of America's history and positive

3

image abroad; and

4

WHEREAS, Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever as its

5

volunteers work in emerging and essential areas, such as

6

information technology and business development, and contribute

7

to the work of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS relief;

8

and

9

WHEREAS, Peace Corps volunteers continue to help countless

10

individuals who want to build a better life for themselves and

11

their children; therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the United

13

States Peace Corps on its 50th anniversary and memorialize the

14

United States Postal Service to issue a 50th Anniversary postage

15

stamp to benefit the Peace Corps; and be it further

16

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

17

the Governor's Office and the Pennsylvania Congressional

18

Delegation.
