A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the week of March 13 through 19, 2011, as

2

"Agriculture Week" and March 15, 2011, as "Agriculture Day"

3

in Pennsylvania.

4

WHEREAS, Agriculture is Pennsylvania's number one industry;

5

and

6

WHEREAS, The act of June 25, 2001 (P.L.729, No.71), provides

7

for the observance of "Pennsylvania Agriculture Day" and

8

"Pennsylvania Agriculture Week" in order to pay tribute to the

9

extraordinary efforts of the men and women who provide us with

10

an abundance of food, fiber and energy, and to recognize the

11

vital contribution they make to the high quality of life within

12

this Commonwealth, the nation and the world; and

13

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's citizens depend on farmers to work

hard to produce an abundant, safe and nutritious food supply on

2

this Commonwealth's rich agricultural land and waterways; and

3

WHEREAS, Local farm businesses support on-farm and farm-

4

related jobs, with one in seven jobs relating to this

5

Commonwealth's agriculture industry, and provide $45 billion in

6

total economic impact; and

7

WHEREAS, With fewer than 2% of Pennsylvanians engaged in

8

farming, one Pennsylvania farmer provides for an average of 146

9

people; and

10

WHEREAS, Our Commonwealth's dedicated farmers lead the way

11

nationally in the production of agricultural commodities,

12

including mushrooms, hardwood lumber, Christmas trees, pumpkins,

13

eggs, apples, milk, grapes, peaches, pears and trout; and

14

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has established an outstanding

15

reputation throughout the nation and world as a leading supplier

16

of agricultural products with the highest quality and safety

17

standards; and

18

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's farmers are responsible stewards of

19

the land, protecting this Commonwealth's fertile soils and clean

20

water for future generations; therefore be it

21

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

22

week of March 13 through 19, 2011, as "Agriculture Week" and

23

March 15, 2011, as "Agriculture Day" in Pennsylvania and call

24

upon the people of this Commonwealth to observe that day with

25

appropriate ceremonies and activities.
