A RESOLUTION

Observing the week of January 24 through 30, 2010, as "National

2

Thrift Week" in Pennsylvania and calling on individuals,

3

families and government at all levels to exercise thrift and

4

fiscal responsibility.

5

WHEREAS, Annual "National Thrift Week" observances from 1916

6

through 1966 highlighted the value of hard work and fiscal

7

discipline and the cultivation of thrift as an American ideal;

8

and

9

WHEREAS, Communities nationwide first celebrated "National

10

Thrift Week" in 1916 with the opening of school savings accounts

11

for children and workplace savings programs; and

12

WHEREAS, The 1916 observance was launched on January 17, the

13

birthday anniversary of early American inventor, author,

14

printer, scientist, philanthropist, statesman and diplomat

15

Benjamin Franklin, who was recognized as the "American apostle

16

of thrift"; and

17

WHEREAS, "National Thrift Week" is no longer celebrated or

18

fully recognized; and

WHEREAS, Our nation and many individuals and families are

facing difficult financial conditions today; and

2

WHEREAS, Recession, unemployment and widespread pay cuts have

3

spurred individuals and governments to reassess financial

4

practices; and

5

WHEREAS, Restoring and instilling thrift and fiscal

6

responsibility as guiding principles for individuals and

7

governments can aid our return to an era of sound financial

8

management and economic prosperity; therefore be it

9

RESOLVED, That the Senate observe the week of January 24

10

through 30, 2010, as "National Thrift Week" in Pennsylvania and

11

call on individuals, families and government at all levels to

12

exercise thrift and fiscal responsibility.
