A RESOLUTION

Honoring the Boy Scouts of America on the centennial anniversary

2

of the organization's founding.

3

WHEREAS, In 1907, General Lord Robert Baden-Powell founded

4

the scouting movement in England seeking to teach vital skills

5

and positive values to youth; and

6

WHEREAS, In 1909, Chicago newspaper publisher W.D. Boyce was

7

visiting London, England, when he became lost in the fog; and

8

WHEREAS, Mr. Boyce was assisted by a young scout in finding

9

his way, thus learning of the scouting movement; and

10

WHEREAS, Impressed by this incident, Mr. Boyce returned from

11

England and incorporated the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) on

12

February 8, 1910; and

13

WHEREAS, The BSA seeks to instill in its members the values

14

of trustworthiness, loyalty, helpfulness, friendliness,

15

courteousness, kindness, obedience, cheerfulness, thriftiness,

16

bravery, cleanliness and reverence; and

WHEREAS, Through participation in numerous outdoor activities

2

and educational programs, the BSA trains youth in responsible

3

citizenship, character development and self-reliance; and

4

WHEREAS, The BSA is the largest youth organization in the

5

United States, with more than 3 million members and more than

6

110 million Americans having served as BSA members since its

7

founding; and

8

WHEREAS, Countless prominent leaders in various fields of

9

endeavor have credited the skills and values they learned in

10

scouting as helping to shape them for success; and

11

WHEREAS, February 8, 2010, marks the 100th anniversary of the

12

founding of the BSA; and

13

WHEREAS, The BSA will be honoring the theme of "Celebrating

14

the Adventure, Continuing the Journey"; therefore be it

15

RESOLVED, That the Senate congratulate the Boy Scouts of

16

America on celebrating the centennial anniversary of its

17

founding and commend the organization for its many contributions

18

to the young lives of successful American citizens.
