| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Respectfully requesting the removal of all Sunoco-brand labeling |
2 | from the 2009 "Welcome America!" festival in Philadelphia. |
3 | WHEREAS, Since 1994, Sunoco, Inc., has been the title sponsor |
4 | of Philadelphia's annual July 4th celebration, "Welcome |
5 | America!" and since that time has donated $500,000 to the event; |
6 | and |
7 | WHEREAS, As an oil refiner and retailer, Sunoco, Inc., offers |
8 | community service to the regions in which it plays a major role |
9 | in an effort to improve its public image; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Sunoco, Inc., employs more than 13,500 people in |
11 | this Commonwealth and has three refineries and a headquarters |
12 | located in Philadelphia; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Sunoco, Inc., has announced that, in an effort to |
14 | cut $300 million in annual costs by the end of the year, a 20% |
15 | reduction in the salaried work force of this Commonwealth is |
16 | required with the bulk of the layoffs coming from its |
17 | headquarters and refineries in Philadelphia; and |
18 | WHEREAS, When urged to reconsider these layoffs by Governor |

1 | Edward G. Rendell, Sunoco, Inc., refused, citing a need to |
2 | remain profitable; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Sunoco, Inc., made $776 million last year, with |
4 | robust earnings the second half of the year and $204 million in |
5 | the fourth quarter alone; and |
6 | WHEREAS, This Commonwealth lost 41,000 jobs in February 2009 |
7 | and cannot afford the layoff of another 750 citizens; therefore |
8 | be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the Senate respectfully request that Welcome |
10 | America, Inc., remove all Sunoco-brand labeling from the 2009 |
11 | "Welcome America!" festival; and be it further |
12 | RESOLVED, That the logo and name of "Sunoco" not appear in |
13 | any title or advertisement for the 2009 "Welcome America!" |
14 | festival in Philadelphia. |
