A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of November 2010 as "Hydrocephalus

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Hydrocephalus is a serious neurological condition,

4

characterized by the abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluids in

5

the ventricles of the brain; and

6

WHEREAS, There is no known cure for hydrocephalus, which

7

affects an estimated 1 million Americans; and

8

WHEREAS, Hydrocephalus is one of the most common birth

9

defects - each year 1.5 out of every 1,000 births result in

10

hydrocephalus; and

11

WHEREAS, Another 6,000 children annually develop

12

hydrocephalus during the first two years of life; and

13

WHEREAS, More than 375,000 older Americans have

hydrocephalus, which is often undetected or misdiagnosed as

2

dementia, Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease; and

3

WHEREAS, With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, people who

4

have hydrocephalus are able to live full and productive lives;

5

and

6

WHEREAS, The standard treatment for hydrocephalus was

7

developed in 1952 and carries multiple risks, including shunt

8

failure, infection and overdrainage; and

9

WHEREAS, Further research into the epidemiology,

10

pathophysiology, disease burden and improved treatment of

11

hydrocephalus is needed; and

12

WHEREAS, There are fewer than ten centers in the United

13

States specializing in the treatment of adults with normal

14

pressure hydrocephalus; and

15

WHEREAS, Each year, the people of the United States spend in

16

excess of $1 billion to treat hydrocephalus; and

17

WHEREAS, September 2010 is recognized nationally as

18

"Hydrocephalus Awareness Month"; and

19

WHEREAS, Thousands of residents of this Commonwealth suffer

20

from the effects of hydrocephalus and are required to obtain

21

specialized treatment to alleviate the symptoms of this

22

condition; and

23

WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is home to several renowned

24

medical institutions and other organizations working to increase

25

public awareness and develop new treatments that will improve

26

the lives of those who are afflicted with this condition;

27

therefore be it

28

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

29

month of November 2010 as "Hydrocephalus Awareness Month" in

30

Pennsylvania and call upon all residents of this Commonwealth to

observe these days by participating in appropriate activities to

2

raise awareness about hydrocephalus.
