A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of July 2010 as the "Month of Freedom" in

2

Pennsylvania in recognition of the Western Pennsylvania

3

Police Athletic League's 2010 Gathering of Peace.

4

WHEREAS, The Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League

5

(WPPAL) was founded in 1978 with the purpose of providing crime

6

prevention programs, not only to reduce crime and violence, but

7

to empower residents and encourage them to become better

8

citizens; and

9

WHEREAS, WPPAL's programs utilize educational, athletic and

10

recreational activities to create trust between law enforcement

11

and youth; and

12

WHEREAS, WPPAL's vision is based on the conviction that young

13

people, if reached early enough, can develop positive attitudes

14

toward law enforcement and the community; and

15

WHEREAS, WPPAL and the Housing Authority of the City of

16

Pittsburgh collaborated to create a new Northside Fitness Center

in Allegheny Dwellings, a public housing community, to address

2

the recreational needs of youth and reduce violent crime; and

3

WHEREAS, WPPAL's 2010 gathering of Peace was held on July 1,

4

2010; and

5

WHEREAS, WPPAL's 2010 Gathering of Peace is a community event

6

that serves to reduce violence while promoting healing and

7

peace; therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

9

month of July 2010 as the "Month of Freedom" in Pennsylvania in

10

recognition of Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League's

11

2010 Gathering of Peace.
