A RESOLUTION

Designating June 17, 2010, as "Ride the Bus Day" in Pennsylvania

2

and encouraging all citizens to ride public transportation.

3

WHEREAS, The American Public Transportation Association

4

(APTA) along with mass transit agencies across the country,

5

including the Schuylkill Transportation System, are taking part

6

in the fifth annual "National Dump the Pump Day" on Thursday,

7

June 17, 2010; and

8

WHEREAS, The annual event is designed to encourage people to

9

leave their personal vehicles at home and ride public

10

transportation to save money, protect the environment, reduce

11

dependence on foreign oil and improve the quality of life for

12

all Americans; and 

13

WHEREAS, With many families already facing tough economic

14

times, transportation is often cited as a high cost for many

15

Americans; and 

16

WHEREAS, Public transportation is a more cost-efficient

method of travel for many commuters; and

WHEREAS, Public transportation helps reduce the amount of

3

vehicle emissions released into the environment and also reduces

4

the country’s carbon footprint by eliminating more vehicles on

5

the road; and 

6

WHEREAS, According to the APTA, public transportation use

7

saves 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline per year in the United

8

States alone; therefore be it

9

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June

10

17, 2010, as "Ride the Bus Day" in Pennsylvania and encourage

11

all citizens to ride public transportation; and be it further

12

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives thank the many

13

people working for our public transportation agencies and the

14

many citizens of the Commonwealth who utilize public

15

transportation services every day in this Commonwealth.
