A RESOLUTION

Designating May 8, 2010, as "Letter Carrier Food Drive Day" in

2

Pennsylvania; and commending the National Association of

3

Letter Carriers for its humanitarian efforts to eliminate

4

hunger.

5

WHEREAS, On Saturday, May 8, 2010, the National Association

6

of Letter Carriers will conduct the 18th annual NALC "Stamp Out

7

Hunger" food drive to combat hunger; and

8

WHEREAS, This is the largest one-day food drive in the

9

nation, which is held in all 50 states and territories of the

10

United States; and

11

WHEREAS, On that day, letter carriers will collect

12

nonperishable donations as they deliver mail along their postal

13

routes; and

14

WHEREAS, The food will be collected in over 10,000

15

communities by nearly 1,400 local branches of the postal union,

16

along with rural carriers and other volunteers; and

17

WHEREAS, Donations will be delivered to food banks, pantries

18

and shelters that serve the area where the donations are

19

collected; and

WHEREAS, The summer months are a particularly critical time

2

for millions of children whose school lunch programs are

3

suspended until fall and their families must find alternate

4

sources of nutrition; and

5

WHEREAS, Letter carriers see these families every day as they

6

deliver the mail and this food drive is one way to help

7

alleviate their plight; and

8

WHEREAS, Postal patrons are encouraged to participate by

9

leaving donations by their mailboxes on May 8, 2010; and

10

WHEREAS, Cosponsors of the drive are the United States Postal

11

Service, the Campbell Soup Company, Valpak/Cox Target Media,

12

Inc., local United Ways, the AFL-CIO and Feeding America food

13

bank network; and

14

WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1993, the nationwide drive

15

has collected and delivered over three-quarters of a billion

16

pounds of food to help hungry families and last year carriers

17

collected 73.4 million pounds of food, which is the third

18

consecutive year the effort has exceeded 70 million pounds;

19

therefore be it

20

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 8,

21

2010, as "Letter Carrier Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania; and be

22

it further

23

RESOLVED, That the National Association of Letter Carriers

24

and its cosponsors be commended for their humanitarian efforts

25

to stamp out hunger; and be it further

26

RESOLVED, That the citizens of this Commonwealth be commended

27

for their past participation in this food drive and encouraged

28

to generously contribute to this year's effort to help feed the

29

hungry.
