| A RESOLUTION |

1 | Supporting placement of a statue of legendary University of |
2 | Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Eagles center and linebacker |
3 | Chuck Bednarik at the Philadelphia Sports Complex. |
4 | WHEREAS, Charles Philip (Chuck) Bednarik, a Bethlehem native |
5 | and resident of Coopersburg, Lehigh County, was a standout as an |
6 | offensive and defensive collegiate and professional football |
7 | player; and |
8 | WHEREAS, A decorated World War II veteran, Mr. Bednarik |
9 | became one of the nation's top college football players with the |
10 | Penn Quakers following his discharge from the United States Air |
11 | Force; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Mr. Bednarik was a three-time all-American and was |
13 | elected to the College Football Hall of Fame; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Mr. Bednarik received further recognition as the |
2 | nation's most outstanding college football player upon his |
3 | selection as 1948 Maxwell Award honoree; and |
4 | WHEREAS, In his professional football career, Mr. Bednarik |
5 | was one of only 13 players in National Football League (NFL) |
6 | draft history who were chosen as first-overall pick and who went |
7 | on to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Beginning his 14-season career with the Philadelphia |
9 | Eagles as first-overall pick of the 1949 draft, Mr. Bednarik |
10 | extended the team's era of league domination by frequently |
11 | playing both offense and defense; and |
12 | WHEREAS, In 1950, Mr. Bednarik received All-NFL recognition |
13 | as center; and |
14 | WHEREAS, From 1951 through 1957, and again in 1960, Mr. |
15 | Bednarik was named to the All-NFL roster as linebacker; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Mr. Bednarik appeared in a record eight Pro Bowls |
17 | and was named most valuable player of the 1954 Pro Bowl; and |
18 | WHEREAS, In 1967, his first year of eligibility, Mr. Bednarik |
19 | was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Mr. Bednarik was named in 1969 to the NFL All-Decade |
21 | Team for the 1950s, in 1987 to the Eagles Honor Roll and in 1994 |
22 | to the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team; and |
23 | WHEREAS, Since 1995, the Chuck Bednarik Award has been |
24 | presented annually to the best defensive collegiate football |
25 | player as selected by the Maxwell Football Club; and |
26 | WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Eagles franchise has retired Mr. |
27 | Bednarik's jersey number 60; and |
28 | WHEREAS, The House of Representatives applaud Mr. Bednarik's |
29 | unique talents and achievements; therefore be it |
30 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives support placement |
