A RESOLUTION

Designating April 28, 2010, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Every year on April 28, communities and worksites

4

around the world honor friends, family members and colleagues

5

who have been killed or injured on the job; and

6

WHEREAS, The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported

7

more than 5,000 annual workplace fatalities, and more than 3.6

8

million yearly work-related injuries and illnesses in recent

9

years, and experts estimate that at least 50,000 deaths occur

10

annually as a result of occupational diseases; and

11

WHEREAS, In 2008, 240 workers were lost through fatal

workplace accidents in this Commonwealth; and

2

WHEREAS, While news reports often focus our attention on

3

disastrous workplace events, most of these workers die

4

individually with little public attention; and

5

WHEREAS, It is appropriate to honor the memory of the

6

courageous and dedicated members of Pennsylvania's labor force

7

who have been injured or disabled or have died as a result of

8

workplace accidents; and

9

WHEREAS, Recognition of the integrity of Pennsylvania's work

10

force and its achievements on behalf of the economic growth of

11

our Commonwealth is necessary; and

12

WHEREAS, It is appropriate to call for vigilance and

13

increased safety in the workplace; and

14

WHEREAS, The House of Representatives wishes to pay tribute

15

to workers who have died or who have been injured or disabled in

16

workplace accidents, to honor the contributions of

17

Pennsylvania's work force and to call for increased workplace

18

safety; therefore be it

19

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April

20

28, 2010, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania.
