| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring Point Park University on the occasion of its 50th |
2 | anniversary. |
3 | WHEREAS, Throughout its history, Point Park University has |
4 | taken pride in its urban roots and contributions to the vitality |
5 | of downtown Pittsburgh; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Point Park University began as a small business |
7 | training college in 1933 under the direction of Dorothy |
8 | Finkelhor and L. Herbert Finkelhor; and |
9 | WHEREAS, By 1960, the business school had grown to more than |
10 | 800 students and moved into the building now known as Academic |
11 | Hall, on Wood Street; and |
12 | WHEREAS, That year it became known as Point Park Junior |
13 | College, named for the city's historic Point State Park; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The junior college soon added programs in |

1 | engineering technology, education and journalism and acquired |
2 | performing arts space at The Pittsburgh Playhouse in the Oakland |
3 | neighborhood; and |
4 | WHEREAS, In 1966, the college was granted four-year status, |
5 | officially becoming Point Park College, and began awarding |
6 | bachelor's degrees; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Point Park's first graduate program, in journalism |
8 | and mass communication, was established in 1981; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Dance and theater programs were introduced, which |
10 | laid the groundwork for Point Park's current Conservatory of |
11 | Performing Arts; and |
12 | WHEREAS, In 2004, it achieved university status and became |
13 | Point Park University; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Today the university enrolls more than 3,900 full- |
15 | time and part-time students in nearly 70 undergraduate programs |
16 | and 11 graduate programs offered through its School of Arts and |
17 | Sciences, School of Business, School of Communication and the |
18 | Conservatory of Performing Arts; and |
19 | WHEREAS, Point Park University students represent 45 states |
20 | and 31 countries; and |
21 | WHEREAS, The university's comprehensive strategic planning |
22 | process has continued, focusing on enhancing academic |
23 | excellence, a quality student experience, managed growth and |
24 | community engagement; and |
25 | WHEREAS, In 2008, Point Park moved into the next chapter of |
26 | its development as a vibrant academic and community partner with |
27 | the announcement of the Academic Village at Point Park |
28 | University, a thriving, living and learning hub; and |
29 | WHEREAS, Point Park's $244 million campus and public |
30 | enhancement space plan is already well on its way to |

1 | transforming the university and downtown Pittsburgh; therefore |
2 | be it |
3 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Point Park |
4 | University on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. |
