A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of February 2010 as "American Heart Month"

2

in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease is the nation's leading cause

4

of death with direct and indirect costs estimated to be $503.2

5

billion in 2010; and

6

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease accounts for more than 34% of

7

all deaths nationwide; and

8

WHEREAS, Nearly 2,300 Americans die of cardiovascular disease

9

each day, an average of one death every 38 seconds; and

10

WHEREAS, An estimated 785,000 people in the United States

11

will have a new coronary attack, an estimated 470,000 people

12

nationwide will have a recurrent attack and an additional

195,000 "silent" heart attacks will occur this year; and

2

WHEREAS, More than 42,000 people die from major

3

cardiovascular disease in Pennsylvania each year; and

4

WHEREAS, Research clearly shows that there are preventative

5

and community-based strategies that can increase survival rates

6

from cardiovascular disease; and

7

WHEREAS, The American Heart Association's 2020 impact goal

8

seeks to improve the cardiovascular health of Americans by 20%

9

while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by

10

20% through research, population and community-level

11

interventions and public health and policy measures; and

12

WHEREAS, The American Heart Association encourages citizens

13

to help save lives by calling 911 if symptoms occur, to become

14

trained in CPR and to encourage comprehensive automated external

15

defibrillator programs in their communities; and

16

WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is celebrating the

17

month of February 2010 as "American Heart Month" and promoting

18

education and awareness by encouraging citizens to learn the

19

warning signs of heart attack and stroke; therefore be it

20

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

21

month of February 2010 as "American Heart Month" in

22

Pennsylvania.
