INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 12, 2009  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of August 2009 as "Kidney Cancer Awareness

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Each year more than 36,000 people in the United

4

States are diagnosed with kidney cancer; and

5

WHEREAS, More than 100,000 kidney cancer survivors are

6

currently living in the United States; and

7

WHEREAS, The exact cause of kidney cancer is unknown; and

8

WHEREAS, Kidney cancer occurs nearly twice as often in men as

in women and occurs mostly in men over 40 years of age; and

2

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimated that last year

3

there would be about 36,160 new cases of kidney cancer (22,490

4

in men and 13,670 in women) in the United States; and

5

WHEREAS, Other than surgery, the most commonly used

6

treatments for kidney cancer are immunotherapy, radiation and

7

chemotherapy; and

8

WHEREAS, Breakthroughs in research over the last year have

9

given renewed hope to patients who previously had few treatment

10

options; therefore be it

11

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the

12

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania designate the month of August 2009

13

as "Kidney Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it

14

further

15

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

16

the National Kidney Cancer Association, 1234 Sherman Avenue,

17

Suite 203, Evanston IL 60202.
